Update on Sweetie, a special-needs kitty who needs a special home!
(12/26/2013) We have an update on Sweetie, a beautiful FIV-positive female cat who needs a special home. Sweetie's current foster dad is now able to pet her and rub her head, and she rolls over for a belly rub. She no longer needs the security of a cardboard box, but does remain caged for her safety. Sweetie is lethargic, sheds fur and drools. We're not sure if the drooling is a symptom of her illness or a response to being pet. This poor, sick, but very loveable cat now craves human contact. However, she must be approached with care to avoid causing stress.
Sweetie is a beautiful animal despite her illness. She would bond with anyone who would care for her, and is low-maintenance. While her prognosis is not good, she is not suffering, and enjoys being able to face another day. She is litter box trained. Sweetie's foster dad has provided toys for her, but she appears to have no interest in them. Her name Sweetie is very appropriate. She is gentle and seems to have come to terms with her illness, or perhaps is blissfully unaware of her own mortality.

Katie Cat is looking for a permanent or foster home
(12/21/2013) Katie Cat is a sweet, pretty, playful 18-month old calico girl with white feet. She was rescued after being abandoned by an irresponsible owner who left the residence. Poor Katie Cat was trying to get back into her old home for months and was starving outside when rescued.
Katie Cat loves to be scratched on the head, enjoys wet food, and likes to play with toys dangling from above. She also loves to stretch up and scratch her post. She is very friendly with visitors.
Katie Cat has been spayed, vaccinated for rabies & distemper, and has tested negative for FiV and Feline Leukemia.
Prospective adopters will be asked to complete an application form (DOC | PDF), and sign an adoption contract if the application is approved. Our adoption fee for one cat is $100, or $150 for two cats together. The adoption fee helps cover our veterinary costs.

Sweetie, a special-needs kitty, needs a special home!
(12/17/2013) Scarlet Paws has learned about Sweetie, a special cat who is FIV-positive. Sweetie is shy and non-aggressive, and prefers to spend her time in the security of a small box. She does not have a good prognosis for longevity. If adopted, she will need a quiet, warm place away from other pets. Sweetie is in hospice now and not suffering in any way. Her immune system is compromised, so she should not be subjected to cold, or come into contact with animals that might be other carrying illnesses. She continues to have a good appetite, despite being ill, and is litter box trained. Sweetie needs a fosterer or adopter who will see that she is comfortable until she passes on.
If you are interested in giving Sweetie a home, please contact Richard at: 732-435-0873, 908-307-3615 or via email at: tegu36@aol.com

Aristotle and Ceasar are looking for a home together!
(12/16/2013) Scarlet Paws has learned about two adorable orange and white male kittens, Aristotle and Ceasar, who are looking for a home together!
Aristotle (above left) is a male cat who has been neutered, vaccinated, and is FIV/FeLV negative. He is playful and friendly. He has endless energy and should get along well with other cats. He is approximately 7 months old. He is litter box trained and has a hearty appetite.
Ceasar (above right), Aristotle's brother, has also has been neutered and vaccinated, and is also FIV/FeLV negative. Ceasar is also playful, friendly, eats well and uses a litter box. Ceasar is slightly larger than Aristotle.
Aristotle and Ceasar would like to be adopted by the same person, as they spend hours playing together!

Boo, Moo, Tripper, Tuxi and Guinevere have been adopted!
(12/14/2013) Scarlet Paws is thrilled to announce that Boo (above left), Moo (above right), Louie (now Tripper) (below right), Tuxi and Guinevere (below left) have all been adopted!
Boo and Moo were rescued from Douglass Campus early in the autumn. These sweet, adorable, lovable kittens were adopted together by a nice family.
Louie was rescued this autumn near Douglass Campus. This "lovey dovey boy" was adopted by a couple who had to say goodbye to their older cat earlier this year, and whose other cat was very sad after her brother passed away. Louie's family says he is doing very well and have renamed him "Hiccup!"
Tuxi and Guinevere were rescued later in the fall from Busch Campus. These beautiful girls won over their foster mom's housemate and have been adopted together!
Please join us in congratulating these wonderful cats and their new families!
Stevie has been adopted! Joey is still looking for a home
(12/08/2013) Great news: Stevie (black female, far right) a sweet, affectionate and playful kitten who overcame both surgery to remove an infected eye and a bout of feline panleukopenia virus, has been adopted! Stevie's foster mom, who did such a wonderful job nursing her back to health, decided that she wanted to give Stevie a forever home. Stevie certainly helped herself by making friends with her foster mom's dog! Please join us in congratulating Stevie and her new family.
Scarlet Paws Animal Welfare Network would also like to thank all our generous supporters who made Stevie's recovery possible!
Stevie's brother Joey (black male, near right) is still up for adoption. Joey is described as a "real love bunny" who "purrs like mad!" Joey has been neutered and is up to date on all vaccinations. He also has no fleas or worms. Won't you consider giving Joey a forever home just in time for the holidays?
Please note that prospective adopters will be asked to complete an application form (DOC | PDF), and sign an adoption contract if the application is approved. Our adoption fee for one cat is $100. The adoption fee helps cover our veterinary costs.

North Brunswick Humane Association provides generous 2013 Spay/Neuter grant to Scarlet Paws
(12/03/2013) Scarlet Paws Animal Welfare Network thanks the North Brunswick Humane Association for an extremely generous 2013 Spay/Neuter grant! These funds come at a time when we are dealing with a large number of campus cats that need to be spayed or neutered. We are very grateful to NBHA for providing this grant to help us bring the cat population under control.

Serenity and Pocket need foster or permanent home
(12/02/2013) We are looking for either a foster or permanent home for Serenity, a beautiful grey mom cat, and her adorable kitten Pocket, recently rescued from New Brunswick. Since this pair have been through so much together, we are seeking to place them together.
Serenity is a serene, gentle domesticated female (approximately 18-20 months old). She was regrettably abandoned by someone who could not care for her. She has proven to be an excellent mother to her sole remaining kitten Pocket, who is approximately 10 weeks old. (Sadly, the mom's other kittens drowned in a torrential downpour). Pocket is a busy bundle of energy, but easy to handle, and has been socialized to human contact since approximately 2 weeks of age. Pocket loves to play and explore; is still nursing but weaning, and is just starting to eat dry food.
Serenity and Pocket are scheduled to be treated by a veterinarian this week.
Prospective adopters will be asked to complete an application form (DOC | PDF), and sign an adoption contract if the application is approved. Our adoption fee for one cat is $100, or $150 for two cats together. The adoption fee helps cover our veterinary costs.
Please note that potential fosterers will be asked to complete a foster agreement (DOC | PDF).

Little Girl and Tommy Carlos are looking for either foster homes or permanent homes
(11/30/2013) Little Girl and Tommy Carlos are two young cats we have recently rescued. They are both looking for either foster homes or permanent homes.
Little Girl (above right) is an adorable brown striped tabby female, approximately 9 months old. She has a gentle nature and loves wet food and treats. Little Girl enjoys playing with dangling toys. She is very sweet, and will let people pet her head to toe once she gets to knows them. Little Girl will purr if you pet her while she is eating! She uses her litter box. Little Girl needs special TLC to continue acclimating to indoor life. She has been spayed, and has received her rabies and distemper vaccinations.
Tommy Carlos (below left) is a handsome grey male with soft, velvety fur; he is approximately 8 months old. He gets very excited when you walk into the room, and loves to rub up against your legs and be pet. Tommy Carlos is learning to play with balls and toys. He uses his litter box. Tommy Carlos has been neutered, and has received his rabies and distemper vaccinations.
If you are interested in fostering or adopting either Little Girl or Tommy Carlos, please contact us!
Sue and Who have been adopted!
(11/10/2013) Sue and Who, two adorable kittens who were rescued from Douglass Campus in early October, have both been adopted! Their adoptive mother reports that they are getting very comfortable in their new home. Congratulations to Sue and Who - and to their new family!
Please help Stevie and other campus cats!
(11/03/2013) Scarlet Paws rescued super sweet kitten Stevie (pictured at right) back in July. Thanks to the generosity of Scarlet Paws members, this little girl successfully made it through surgery to remove an eye that was infected. Unfortunately, she contracted feline panleukopenia virus, which can be very deadly. At one point we thought she wasn't going to make it, but this amazingly tough little kitty has fought back once again and it looks like she is on the road to recovery. Another bright moment occurred when Stevie was reunited with her brother Joey, who was also rescued this summer. Stevie's most recent vet bills have cost $1000, and as a result our resources have been sorely depleted. We need to reach out again to our kind supporters to help us defray the cost of her care.
Scarlet Paws has also incurred many medical expenses during an incredibly busy fall (which is not over yet)! Thanks to our amazing volunteers and helpers, twenty cats and kittens have been trapped and treated by veterinarians. Two have already been adopted and fourteen are in foster care or up for adoption. Four who were determined to be feral were spayed or neutered and returned to colonies that are cared for by Scarlet Paws. These cats came from College Avenue, Douglass, Livingston, and campus buildings in downtown New Brunswick. We are also fortunate to work with organizations that recognize the efforts of those who would rescue animals and provide discounts for vetting rescued animals, but we would not be capable of making the cats' lives safer and giving them homes without the kindness and generosity of our donors.
If you would like to help, you can either donate securely via PayPal, or by mail. (Any donations received in excess of Stevie's veterinary costs will go to the Scarlet Paws Animal Welfare Network general fund, and will assist us in our mission of caring for animals found living on the New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.)
Thank you!
Lou and Lass have been adopted!
(10/31/2013) Lou (at right) and Lass (not pictured), two kittens who were recently rescued from Douglass Campus, have both been adopted!
Lou, a grey "tiger" tabby, was described by his foster mom as a wonderful kitten who socialized himself! He was adopted by a nice family with two young boys. Lou's new Dad reported that "he is absolutely fantastic with the boys (and vice versa)."
Lou's sister Lass has been adopted this week by a young couple.
Congratulations to Lou and Lass - and their new families!
Goldie is still looking for a home!
(10/13/2013) Goldie (left; click picture for a larger image) is a sweet, friendly, gentle and loving one-eyed senior cat (13 years old). She is currently in foster care. Her previous owner was an elderly gentleman who was no longer able to care for her.
Goldie is an extraordinarily people-oriented cat who would be best suited for someone who spends a lot of time at home. She readily greets new people (both adults and responsible children) and loves to sit on someone's lap or rub around their legs. Goldie is also very vocal!
Please note that Goldie would prefer to be the single cat in a home, as she is aggressive towards other cats.
Goldie has been spayed, front de-clawed, tested negative for FIV/Feline Leukemia, and is up to date on her Rabies and Distemper vaccinations.
If you are interested in adopting Goldie, please visit her Petfinder page at: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/26493231?rvp=1
Please note that prospective adopters will be asked to complete an application form (DOC | PDF), and sign an adoption contract if the application is approved. Our adoption fee for one cat is $100. The adoption fee helps cover our veterinary costs.

(09/21/2013) We are thrilled to announce that Lizzie (left), a beautiful Labrador mix who was rescued from an abusive household, has found her forever home! Scarlet Paws Animal Welfare Network was able to connect her with a member of the Rutgers community who recently adopted her

Scarlet Paws donors step up to provide funding for kitten's eye surgery
(08/12/2013) Update: We are extremely grateful to Scarlet Paws donors for their overwhelming response to our appeal to help Stevie (below), a kitten with infected eyes found on Douglass Campus in late June. We have received more than enough donations to cover the cost of Stevie's veterinary bills (including her eye surgery, spaying, vaccinations, de-worming, and treatment for fleas).
Stevie now weighs over 2 pounds, and is doing very well at her foster home. After her surgery and recuperation, we will be looking to find a permanent home for Stevie. Despite her disability, she is full of energy. She knows how to use the litter box and enjoys eating and playing. Stevie has had all her shots, has been de-wormed and treated for fleas. She is a loving cat and we know she will have a full life despite her partial blindness!
While Stevie's immediate needs have been met, we always welcome donations to assist us in our mission of caring for animals found living on the New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. You can either donate securely via PayPal, or by mail.
Thanks again to everyone who donated to help Stevie!
Kitten rescued from Douglass Campus needs eye surgery - please help!
(08/10/2013) When Stevie (right) was discovered at one of our colonies on Douglass Campus in late June, both of her eyes were badly infected. Luckily, she was easy to capture, and was taken immediately to the vet to be treated. She only weighed half a pound and was in bad shape, but after a few days her eyes seemed to get better. Initially, the vet believed that both of her eyes would need to be removed. A very kind member of Scarlet Paws has done a masterful job fostering her over the past month and a half.
Stevie now weighs over 2 pounds, and her left eye has greatly improved. Unfortunately, her right eye will need to be surgically removed. Even with a substantial discount from the vet, the cost of her care will exceed $500 (this will includes her eye surgery, as well as spaying, vaccinations, de-worming and treatment for fleas).
We are hoping some kind souls will be willing to help defray her vet bill. We are also looking to find a permanent home for Stevie, who (despite her disability) is full of energy. She knows how to use the litter box and enjoys eating and playing. She has had all her shots, has been de-wormed and treated for fleas. She is a loving cat and we know she will have a full life despite her partial blindness!
If you would like to help Stevie, you can either donate securely via PayPal, or by mail. (Any donations received in excess of Stevie's veterinary costs will go to the Scarlet Paws Animal Welfare Network general fund, and will assist us in our mission of caring for animals found living on the New Brunswick campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.)
Thank you!

Their family reports that "they're really fun, loving cats and are so glad they're now part of our home permanently."
Congratulations to Wolverine, Major Tom, and their new family!
